Van Halen was born from the fiery ambition of two Dutch-born brothers, Eddie and Alex Van Halen, who moved to Pasadena, California in the 1960s. Originally trained in classical piano, they ditched the ivories for electric guitar and drums, forming a band called Mammoth. Realizing they needed a charismatic frontman, they recruited David Lee Roth, and later added bassist Michael Anthony to complete the original lineup.
Renamed Van Halen, the group exploded onto the Los Angeles club scene in the mid-1970s, eventually landing a deal with Warner Bros. Their self-titled debut album in 1978 showcased Eddie’s revolutionary finger-tapping guitar technique and Roth’s flamboyant vocals, setting a new standard for hard rock.
Hits like “Runnin’ with the Devil,” “Jump,” and “Why Can’t This Be Love” propelled them to global fame. Despite lineup changes—including Roth’s departure and Sammy Hagar’s arrival—the band remained a dominant force in rock through the ’80s and ’90s. Eddie’s son Wolfgang later joined, continuing the family legacy.
Van Halen wasn’t just a band—they were a sonic revolution that redefined rock guitar and stage performance.
